Planning permission sought after publican family turns second pub into hostel

The family owners of two pubs turned into hostels in a small Laois town are seeking planning permission to retain the change of use in the second premises.
Applicant Marc Lennon, owner of Lennons in Durrow which is now a hostel, has lodged a planning application to Laois County Council to do a similar change to the pub that is owned by his sister Niamh Lennon up the street, called Peadar's Bar.

"The premises has operated as a guesthouse/hostel since December 2022 without any reported issues or complaints. This
retention application aims solely to regularise the property’s current use.

It is proposed to replace a door on the left elevation with a window and to add two new windows to the right elevation, as detailed in drawing 22-037-401. Thet say that the alterations will ensure all rooms receive natural light and ventilation, in compliance with Failte Ireland's Welcome Standard.
"A seating area with picnic benches will be provided at the rear of the site for guests to smoke and socialize outdoors. This area will be located near the rear boundary to minimize noise for neighboring properties."
They note that "since the change of use, Marc has obtained a Fire Certificate and Disability Access Certificate, confirming that the premises is fully safe and accessible for all guests".
The application includes a letter of consent for the works by the property owner, Niamh Lennon, sister to the applicant.
Last September, Laois County Council approved a similar plan on Lennon's Bar and Venue, which is also on Mary Street in Durrow.
A decision is due in early January 2025.
