Portarlington traffic will be diverted while repair works take place

A busy road from Portarlington in Laois on the way to Dublin is to close periodically for four months, while a bridge undergoes repairs.

Kildare County Council has issued notice that a section of the R425 will shut on June 6, and reopen on September 30, 2025. The stretch of road goes from the Junction with the Passlands Bridge on local road L-7063 to the junction with the L-7049.

The closure is to allow remedial repairs to the Passlands Bridge.

They say that the duration of closure at any one time will be 14 days.

"Westbound traffic travelling to Portarlington from Rathangan / Monasterevin will be diverted left along the R424 at Passlands Bridge. At the junction of Main Street / R445 (Moore Abbey main gates) they will be directed right, along the R445 to Portlaoise.

"Traffic wishing to rejoin the R424 will turn right at the junction of the R420 (sign posted Portarlington).

"Eastbound traffic travelling to Rathangan / Monasterevin, will be diverted at Lea Crossroads away from the R424 and onto the R420. At the junction with the R445, traffic will turn left (sign posted Kildare/Monasterevin). At the junction of Main Street (Moore Abbey gates) traffic will turn left onto the R424.

Diversionary routes will be signposted. Emergency access and restricted local access will be maintained, the local authority says.
