Big changes are underway in a popular Portlaoise pub.

Ramsbottom & Son on Main Street has closed temporarily, with new management announced to be in place.

Renovations are getting underway.

The Downtown Portlaoise traders group is supporting the venture.

"Big news for Portlaoise! Follow Ramsbottom’s Pub who is under new management and is temporarily closed for renovations. They have big plans ahead with the bar back opening soon! They are also looking for enthusiastic bar staff to join the team. Drop them an email to [email protected]."

A short video invites new staff.

The traditional public house is in operation for some 120 years, beginning as a hotel and then a grocery and pub, which continued into the 1990s, according to local historic website Portlaoise Pictures.

They note that proprietors Liam and Frances Ryan took over in 1957 and ran the pub and grocery for another 40 years, with a local comment that "there was grand atin' and drinkin' in Liam Ryan's".

The latest proprietor was Tom Walsh, who converted it fully into a pub, hosting local live music.
