Portlaoise now has 59 Big Belly Bins but walkers still caught short

Portlaoise walking routes don't have enough bins, with people complaining that they have to carry their rubbish on long walks.

Laois County Council has been asked to add more eco friendly bins on the roads around Portlaoise, especially on the Borris Road and the four Slí na Sláinte walking routes around the town.

They have already installed 59 Big Belly solar compactor bins in Portlaoise.

Cllr Tommy Mulligan said adding more on walking routes will promote the idea of cleaner roads and give more convenience to walkers.

"I understand there have been issues previously with dumping and misuse. I'd like to think that's a thing of the past, thanks to the great work of Portlaoise Tidy Towns and the council. The roads are looking great. There's a sense of pride around the town.

"With those roads looking so well, a lot of people are using roads for walking and running. I have had requests from people for extra bins. They find it an inconvenience to carry rubbish for a considerable length of time," he said.

He tabled a motion with his request to the April meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District.

In reply, Portlaoise MD officials say that they have expanded the street bin service in recent years, but will consider Cllr Mulligan's suggested locations for more. However they will have to wait until "if/when" extra money is found.

Cllr Caroline Dwane Stanley had seconded the motion.

"There has been good work around the town. It does not require loads more, but one or two in strategic locations would enhance the area," she said.

Cllr Marie Tuohy added her support.

"We can all see the great work by tidy towns volunteers. We've such great walkways now and bins help keep them litter free," she said.
