Laois teenager excels in hurdles and relay events at prestigious European competition

Portlaoise Athletics Club athlete Daniel Downey produced a series of impressive performances for Ireland at the European Athletics U18 Championships in Rieti, Italy, over the weekend.

The 17-year-old represented both his club and county with distinction as he competed against some of Europe's finest young athletes, reaching the semi-final of the 400m hurdles before helping Ireland's medley relay team to a new national record.

Downey began his championships in the 400m hurdles and delivered an outstanding performance to progress through the opening round. He then returned to the track on Saturday for the semi-final, where he produced a significant personal best despite the challenging conditions and extreme temperatures in Italy.

Downey was back in action on Sunday as part of Ireland's medley relay team. The Irish quartet produced a superb display, setting a new Irish U18 record in the event. However, despite the record-breaking run, Ireland narrowly missed out on qualification for the final, finishing just one place outside the qualifying spots.

Adding to an already memorable weekend, Downey was also entrusted with the role of captain of the Irish team, a significant honour that reflected the high regard in which he is held by Athletics Ireland and his fellow athletes.

The championships marked another milestone in what has been a remarkable year for the talented teenager. Alongside his athletics exploits, Downey also featured for Laois at minor level in both football and hurling during the 2026 inter-county season.

His performances in Rieti further underline his potential and suggest there is plenty more to come from the Portlaoise AC star as he continues his development on the national and international stage.

Representing Ireland at a major European championship is an achievement in itself, but to leave with a personal best, a national relay record and the honour of captaining his country ensured it was a weekend to remember for Downey, his family and Portlaoise AC.
