Monday, November 11 marked a somber day in the history of Portlaoise GAA as the club learned of the peaceful passing of John Joe 'Oul Timer' Ging, a true legend in Laois hurling. John Joe, who captained the iconic four-in-a-row hurling team from 1981 to 1984, leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered.
Known for his formidable presence at full-back, he was a pillar of strength, courage, and grit. His leadership was instrumental in guiding Portlaoise to their historic victory in 1981, breaking a 38-year drought since their last Bob O'Keeffe Cup triumph in 1943. His contributions during these contests secured his status as a local hero.
Beyond hurling, Ging was also an accomplished footballer, securing two Leinster club titles and numerous county championships. His versatility and talent shone across both codes, earning him recognition as one of the finest dual players in Portlaoise’s history.
After retiring from an illustrious playing career, he devoted himself to coaching, often working alongside his longtime friend John Taylor. His wisdom, no-nonsense approach, and dedication made him a trusted mentor for many teams over the years.
He was recently was honored at Portlaoise GAA's Annual Dinner Dance, where he and his teammates from the legendary four-in-a-row team were celebrated. It was a joyful occasion that allowed Ging to reminisce about the glory days, sharing memories with old friends and teammates.
John Joe 'Oul Timer' Ging will be dearly missed, not only for his achievements on the field but also for the camaraderie and spirit he brought to the club. His legacy will remain an integral part of Portlaoise GAA’s story.
