A Portlaoise housing estate has been approved to get two traffic calming speed ramps.

Heathfields estate on the Dublin Road will get the ramps on a phased basis, following a request by Cllr Thomasina Connell, who will fund the ramps from her council discretionary spending budget.

Cllr Connell tabled a motion to the September meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District, asking for the ramps, to encourage vehicles to slow down.

"I was contacted by residents to do something to slow the cars down. They're delighted to hear this.  We are all so conscious of road safety particularly in the last few weeks with deaths on the roads rising," she said.

Cllr Barry Walsh seconded the motion.

"I'll always support safety measures in estates," he said.

Laois County Council's area engineer Wes Wilkinson said that the Portlaoise district office will make arrangements to install the ramps one by one.

"A ramp will be installed in the vicinity of the property with the eircode 32TNNO in the coming weeks. The second ramp adjacent to the property with the eircode R32Y9CC will be installed in early 2024," Mr Wilkinson said.
