Portlaoise railway bridge struck by vehicle

Irish Rail temporarily suspended services through Portlaoise after a bridge was struck by a vehicle this morning.
Bridge strikes are a relatively common problem in Portlaoise when high sided vehicles collide with the railway bridges in the town.
“Services are currently suspended through Portlaoise station due to reports of a vehicle having struck a bridge in the area. Update to follow,” Irish Rail tweeted this morning.
Shortly after 9am Irish Rail tweeted again after the bridge had been inspected by Irish Rail staff to ensure it was safe.
“Services have resumed through Portlaoise station. Some services are operating with delays of approximately 25 minutes,” they said.
Irish Rail says a new warning system is being designed for railway bridges in Portlaoise and it is expected to be in place by the end of the year.
