Prison for damaging car in Portlaoise

A prison term was handed down to a man who admitted causing €300 damage to his ex partner’s car in Portlaoise.

Nigel Goldby, 30, of 74 Inishannagh Park, Newcastle, Co Galway admitted causing the damage to a car windscreen at Railway Street, Portlaoise on January 13, 2023. 

Solicitor Philip Meagher said his client had a significant drink problem for many years. 

The incident “stemmed from an argument he had with his ex partner,” said Mr Meagher. He said the defendant had since gotten treatment for drink but wasn’t in a position to compensate the victim. 

“He is no longer a slave to the drink,” Mr Meagher told the sitting of Portlaoise District Court. 

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced the man to two months in custody.
