Local politicians in south Longford have voiced their concerns over speeding with calls for increased signage and and other traffic calming measures to be implemented in high risk areas.

A speed detector sign has been requested for a rural Laois road where traffic is going at "mind boggling" speeds above the 80km/h limit.

The road is between Portlaoise and Ballyfin, on a stretch between Ross and Horan's Cross.

Laois County Council has been asked to install the speed radar sign by Cllr Willie Aird, at the April meeting of Portlaoise Muncipal District.

"Money should never be an excuse for safety. It's regrettable, the speeds people are travelling at are mind boggling.

"There are seven or eight houses there. On the Abbeyleix road you can still see people putting on the brakes at the sign. It's a great reminder," he said.

Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald seconds his motion.

"Speed is really bad on that road," she said.

In reply, the area engineer said he will meet Cllr Aird on site to identify a suitable location for an 80kph speed radar sign in the vicinity of Horan's Cross and Ross.
