Danny McRedmond died in Clonaslee at the weekend

The death of a popular local man at the weekend has caused shock and sadness.

Danny McRedmond of Cloonagh Beg, Clonaslee, died on Saturday. Clonaslee United FC paid tribute to the former player and manager.

“It was with great sadness that we learned of the tragic passing of our former player, manager and long time friend of the club Danny McRedmond.

As a player Danny was a gentle giant on the pitch, but equally adept at scoring goals when he played as a striker, as he was at keeping goals out when he played as a keeper.

However his achievements as a player were easily exceeded when Danny took on the manager's job when he led the club to two cup finals in the one season - for a club like Clonaslee United to play a cup final in the legendary Dalymount Park stadium is unheard of, but Danny and the late Gerry Dunne brought our team to an amazing cup run which culminated in a cup final appearance against Romstar United in the home of Irish football. Sadly the result didn't go our way on the day, but it is no exaggeration to say that reaching that cup final is the biggest achievement in Clonaslee United history, and something Danny himself was always very proud of.

Everyone in the club would like to offer our deepest condolences to Danny's wife Kay and their two daughters, Danielle and Claire, his brothers and sisters and all the extended family and friends at this sad time. May Danny Rest in Peace,” the club said in an online post.

Predeceased by his parents Joe and Julia (Juggy). Danny will be sadly missed and always remembered by his loving wife Kay and daughters Danielle and Claire, sons in law Denis and Mairtín, his adored grandchildren Dan and Senán, brothers, sisters, brothers in law, sisters in law, nieces, nephews, relatives, work colleagues, neighbours and many friends.

He is reposing at the Heritage Centre, Clonaslee on Tuesday from 4pm until 6.30pm. His  funeral mass takes place on Thursday at 12 noon in St. Manman's Church, Clonaslee, followed by Burial after Mass in the local Cemetery.
