‘Simple solution’ for dangerous Laois crossroads

Cllr Conor Bergin raised the issue of a dangerous junction at a meeting of Laois County Council
There’s a simple solution to improve safety at a dangerous crossroads in Laois, a Council meeting was told.
Cllr Conor Bergin tabled a motion in relation to the junction. He asked ‘’That Laois County Council apply to the Department of Transport for a specific improvement grant, to facilitate safety improvement works at the junction of the L1050 and L5053 roads at the crossroads serving Lackey/Clonoonagh, Ballaghmore, having regard to the dangerous nature of the junction and the need to improve visibility and overall road safety for all road users.’’
In a written response, the Council said: “A Low-Cost Safety Improvement Scheme Application has been completed by the MD Office and is with the Roads Department for submission to the Department.”
Cllr Bergin said he had spoken to a local landowner who was willing to engage with the Council in relation to the junction. He said it was a busy section of road and people also walked the road.
According to Cllr Bergin, there is a simple low cost solution open to the Council. “With the consent of the landowner, remove the ditch, remove the hedging, put in new posts…everyone is happy,” he said.
Cllr John King seconded the motion and said it was “good that the landowners are dealing with local engineers and the Council. Everybody is winning.”
The issue was discussed during the October meeting of Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.
