A developer made the claim in a fresh application for planning permission for a housing project on Harper’s Lane

The developer behind a proposed housing project in Portlaoise claimed there have been a number of incidents where the site notice for the development was ‘removed or burnt’.

Applicant Billy Kirwan made the comments in a new planning application to Laois County Council seeking planning permission to build six houses on Harper’s Lane.

If given the green light the houses will be built on the site of a cottage that was demolished to make way for the property development.

Last year Laois County Council refused Mr Kirwan planning permission to build seven houses on the site.

The planners said they made their decision on the basis of information supplied, citing road safety and drainage issues.

They said the Road Safety Audit submitted did not adequately reflect the proposed development and issues raised.

In the latest application the applicant said: “A Road traffic safety audit was carried out by Roadplan and the current site layout has been updated in order to allow for the Safety Audit recommendations.”

The new application was initially deemed invalid by the council because the site notice “was erected at a place where it is not easily visible and legible by persons using the public road.”

In response the applicant said: “The planning submission was invalidated due to the location of the site notice, this has now been amended and moved closer to the boundary wall, however please note we have had a number of incidents where the site notice has been removed or burnt.”

Laois County Council is due to make a decision on the development by September 20 with submissions being accepted up to August 30.
