The woman appeared before Portlaoise District Court

A woman who stole bedding from a supermarket in Portlaoise was ordered to carry out community service.

Tatiana Ciobanu (38) of 6 Parkrise, Birr, Co Offaly, admitted stealing bedding valued at €800 from Dunnes Stores, Kyle Centre, Portlaoise on October 25 last.

Sgt Kirby had previously indicated that he would like to make an application to have the woman banned from driving. He told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that the application was due to the use of a vehicle and the values of the goods taken but said “I will reluctantly withdraw that application”.

“If anything like that happens again I certainly will be making an application,” he said.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick thanked Sgt Kirby and said her client had entered a guilty plea and had brought a letter from her children’s school and compensation for Dunne Stores.

Judge Susan Fay described the theft of €800 worth of goods as significant. She asked Ms Fitzpatrick if the  woman was willing to engage with community service.

Ms Fitzpatrick said the woman was and she handed over €800 which the woman had brought to court.

When the money was handed over, Judge Susan Fay imposed 40 hours of community service in lieu of two months in prison.
