A suspended sentence was handed down to a man who was caught with €10 worth of cannabis.

Jake Shore, 25, of Dysart Beg, Mountrath pleaded guilty to possession of the drug for personal use at O’Moore Place, Portlaoise on May 2, 2023.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the defendant was caught with €10 worth of cannabis. He said the man had five previous convictions.

Solicitor Josepine Fitzpatrick said the defendant, who wasn’t present, had instructed her to plead guilty.

“He has been using cannabis from time to time,” she said.

“It is something he does need to address,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

Judge Andrew Cody sentenced the defendant to two months which he suspended for two years. He adjourned the matter to Portlaoise District Court on January 18, as the defendant needs to be in court for the sentence to be imposed.
