Three Laois projects awarded funding to improve water quality

Among the projects funded was the installation of a weather station at the Heath National School
Three Laois projects have been successful in securing government funding under a scheme aimed at protecting and restoring good water quality.
Portlaoise Tidy Towns received €6,150 for Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) improvement on the Triogue River.
The Heath Group Water Scheme Limited received €800 in funding for the installation of a weather station at the Heath National School.
The Killeshin Waterworks Committee also received €500 under the scheme for the restoration of Reservoir Bypass Sluice Gates and the erection of information signage.
The funding under the ‘Community Water Development Fund Open Call 2024’ was announced on World Water Day on Friday.
Under the fund local communities and groups were invited to apply for financial assistance to support the delivery of projects and initiatives to enhance local water bodies and benefit water quality and biodiversity.
Minister of State with responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan TD, welcomed these announcements saying: "I’m delighted to announce €1.2m for 155 projects nationwide to improve water quality. Under the Community Water Development Fund, grants totalling €702,605 will fund the grassroots work of local communities and voluntary groups to raise awareness of our rivers, lakes and streams and the biodiversity they support."
