Traffic calming wanted on busy road near school in Laois

Laois County Council is to install traffic calming measures on a busy regional road between Mountmellick and Emo.
They have agreed to traffic calming at Kilmainham, on the R422 near a sharp bend in the road at the junction to The Commons.
It is on foot of a motion by Cllr Willie Aird to the December meeting of Portlaoise Municipal District.
He requested measures similar to those at The Rock National School a short distance away on the same road, which has flashing speed indicator signs and painted road markings.
Although absent from the meeting, Cllr Aird's motion was tabled by Fine Gael colleague Cllr Barry Walsh.
“We want it as safe as possible for the school. When you are upgrading any school's road markings, what you did at the Abbeyleix school is effective,” he said.
Cllr Catherine Fitzgerald supported the motion.
“It is a very busy road. Cars go very fast in Kilmainham,” she said.
Engineer Wes Wilkinson agreed to install signage and road markings at the area.
