It is vital that Mountmellick gets money for transport and connectivity according to a councillor who is eager to see a new transport plan completed that's required to access funds to achieve this aim.

That was the point made by Cllr Paddy Bracken, Fianna Fáil, at a recent meeting with Laois County Council officials. He tabled a motion calling for an update on the Mountmellick Transportation Plan.

“This plan is very important and we proceed to get work done because it is vital that Mountmellick gets funding for connectivity,” he said.

Diarmaid Donoghue, Senior Executive Engineer,  Active Travel replied.

“A first draft of the transport plan will be received this June following which a review will be carried out by the Roads and Planning Departments. A briefing to the elected members on the local transport plan will be arranged following the issue of the final draft,” he said.

The issue was raised at the May 2023 meeting of the Borris-in-Ossory Mountmellick Municipal District.

Cllr Bracken was told at the same meeting that approval of funding for the flood defence scheme was also a factor in what walkways could be improved in the town.

Extensive resurfacing work was carried out on the N80 through the town in 2022.
