Two Laois couples welcomed New Year babies in Portlaoise hospital on January 1.

Baby girl Maya was born to Alanna Kelly and Leon Lawlor from Portarlington just an hour after midnight, on January 1 at 1am.

The HSE has congratulated the new babies and their families.

"Congratulations and best wishes to the first Laois babies born on New Year’s Day 2024 at the Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise," a spokesperson said.

There were 1,402 births in Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise in 2023.
