There were minor injuries as a result of the collision

A Russian man appeared in court following a motorway collision where people were injured and two cars were written off.

Irakli Berdzenishvili(30) of the Montague Hotel, Cappakeel, Emo admitted having no insurance on the M7 motorway on February 17 last.

Garda Eoin McMahon told a sitting of Portlaoise District Court that he responded to a crash on the motorway at 8pm on the date in question.

He said the defendant was one of the drivers involved and there was no insurance disc in the window of his vehicle.  He said there were minor injuries as a result of the collision and the defendant had no previous convictions.

David Nugent BL said his client doesn’t speak any English. He said the man was pleading guilty to no insurance but he asked for an adjournment and for an interpreter to be assigned in order to consult with the man.

Judge Andrew Cody asked if the man was working and he enquired about the damage caused in the collision.

Garda McMahon said “there was two other vehicles written off” as a result of the crash.

Mr Nugent said his client wasn’t working and he had an application for legal aid.

Judge Cody requested a Russian interpreter and granted legal aid. He adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on September 5.
