Vulnerable older Laois residents fall victim to fake Garda house caller

Emo, Ballybrittas and Ballyroan targeted by person pretending to be a Garda
Laois Gardaí have issued further advice to prevent elderly homeowners falling victim to fake Garda house callers, after a spate of incidents were reported in Emo, Ballybrittas and Ballyroan.
Last Saturday evening, June 29, a man driving a black car, called to homes in the three villages, claiming to be a Garda, which is in itself a criminal offence.
Gardaí say they are "following a definite line of enquiry" over the incidents, but appeal to anybody who records CCTV footage to check it and contact them if anything suspicious shows up.
A spokesperson told the Leinster Express / Laois Live more.
"We are investigating a number of incidents where people were approached by someone asking questions around money.
"The message we want to get out, is that Gardaí will not ask you to show them your money.
"We make contact in advance, we do not cold call to houses. We only call for other legitimate reasons.
"Unfortunately the people being targeted don't engage online (on social media) to see our advice. We ask neighbours of older people to advise them not to engage with strangers.
"Do not keep large amounts of cash in your house. If you are suspicious, don't engage, don't open your door. Ring the station and we will confirm if it is a genuine Garda," the spokesperson said.
Anyone wishing to get advice can contact Sgt Graham Kavanagh, Laois Offaly Crime Prevention Officer, via any Garda station.
