Watch: Concrete work in Laois on prefabricated Portlaoise apartment block

Big crain lifts panels into place in Portlaoise

Work is progressing apace in Portlaoise on the new social housing on the site of former church lands in the town.

A big crane has been working for weeks lifting concrete panels into place as part of the construction of a new apartment building on the site of the former Portlaoise parish church on Church Avenue.

Offaly company Bretland is building the new apartment block on behalf of Sophia Housing partnership with Laois County Council.

It will see 52 new homes being created via the new apartments and the conversion of the former Presentation Convent building, which had fallen into dereliction, and the also vacant Sacred Heart.

Sophia says the homes will be ready for the people by end of 2025 with the project expected to cost in the region of €26 million.
