Woman stole from Aldi Portlaoise

A shoplifter who failed to engage with probation services has been bound to the peace.
Mary McDonagh, 48, of Irishtown, Mountmellick, was convicted of stealing goods from Aldi in Portlaoise on August 10, 2022.
Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the woman was observed entering the shop with three other people. She was observed “shop lifting” on CCTV. Goods valued at €92.65 were taken and all of the items were recovered but €15 worth were not in resalable condition, said Sgt Kirby.
Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick said her client was referred to the probation services in October last year.
She said the woman should have engaged with the probation services but it was leading up to Christmas and she was busy and didn’t open the letters until January, when it was too late.
Judge Cephas Power noted the woman had no previous convictions for theft or anything other than motoring offences.
He bound her to the peace for 12 months.
