The woman appeared before Portlaoise District Court

A woman admitted stealing clothes and groceries from Dunnes Stores in Laois.

Alison Hennesy (33) of Rathmore Road, Stradbally stole the goods from Dunnes Stores, Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise on April 5 last.

Garda Sergeant JJ Kirby said the accused walked into Dunnes Stores and took items valued at €92.49 before leaving without payment. He said the woman had five previous convictions but none for theft.

Judge Susan Fay asked if any effort had been made to compensate Dunnes Stores.

“She comes to court with €100 for Dunnes Stores,” said Solicitor Michael Byrne.

He said at the time of offending she was homeless and addicted to drugs but she had now “put her life back in order” and was drug free, he said.

He said the woman was now seven months drug free and he asked the judge to be as lenient as possible.

Judge Fay granted legal aid, ordered a probation report and put the case back to Portlaoise District Court on March 3, 2025.
