A woman was unable to come up with compensation for thefts because her home flooded, a court heard.

Tara Kane (34) of 19 Clonroosk View, Portlaoise is accused of stealing bedding valued at €241.97 from Harry Corrys  in Portlaoise on November 22, 2023, groceries valued at €47 from Centra, Main Street, Portarlington on May 17, 2024 and the theft of groceries valued at €109 from Mulhalls Supervalu, Kellyville Park, Portlaoise on January 27, 2024.

Solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick noted “the court had hoped there would be compensation” produced at the sitting of Portlaoise District Court.

However, she explained that five weeks ago the woman’s house “was flooded” and as a result she was unable to come up with the compensation.

Judge Nicola Andrews agreed to adjourn the case to 2025 but told the defendant to explain to the judge why she had allowed extra time.

Judge Andrews adjourned the case back to Portlaoise District Court on February 24, 2025.
