Woman appears before Portlaoise District Court

A woman has appeared before Portlaoise District Court accused of public order offences.

Ms Lisa Power (35) of 51 O’Moore Place, Portlaoise was accused of public disorder on May 20, 2025 on the Dublin road, Portlaoise. The accused was allegedly highly intoxicated and unsteady on her feet, when gardaí arrested her for her own safety.

The defendant is also accused of screaming and staggering in O’Moore Place, Portlaoise on December 8, 2025.

On April 27, 2025, the accused was found on the footpath slumped over. Gardaí issued a fixed charge penalty notice, reporting that the accused was intoxicated and began shouting.

Defending solicitor Josephine Fitzpatrick told Judge Catherine Ryan that on May 25, 2026 the accused had fallen and was on her way to the hospital.

“Unfortunately she was also drinking. She attended hospital and was referred to probation services, where there was little engagement,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

Ms Fitzpatrick noted that the accused has attended all scheduled sessions with the Athy Alternative Project.

“She is 35 years old and engagement with probation services was poor, but this was substituted by her engagement with the Athy project,” Ms Fitzpatrick said.

“Rehab is a work in progress, she has received medical attention and was not prescribed any medications. There is historic drug addiction, but she is abstinent. She is hoping to serve outdoor work and gainful employment,” she said.

The court heard that the accused has been referred to Merchant’s Quay for supports.

Judge Ryan remanded the accused on bail until September 28 to allow her time to engage with services.

“If she hasn’t engaged the court will convict,” Judge Ryan said.

The judge granted legal aid at the request of Ms Fitzpatrick.
