Work begins in Portlaoise restricting traffic through Laois town

Laois County Council closes road
Work is underway in Portlaoise that will prevent motorists will not be able to drive from Market Square to Portlaoise Parish Church for a week.
Laois County Council is closing Bridge Street, from the Well Road junction at Hume's Pub and the Leinster Express office, as far as the roundabout at SS Peter and Paul's Church.
This means cars and trucks cannot use Main St to get to the Stradbally and Dublin Roads, which commence at the end of Bridge St.
The busy Portlaoise road will be shut to traffic from Monday, July 22 until Friday, July 26, during working hours, from 8am to 6pm.
County Hall says traffic will be diverted right onto Well Road at the Leinster Express offices.
The council plans to resurface the road, which is still covered with the uneven concrete pavers that had to be controversially recovered with concrete on Main Street some years ago after they began lifting up causing trip hazards.
