A large volume of rubbish was dumped on the green in Garvey's Close, Longford town. The council said the rubbish will be removed today, Monday May 11

Authorities have launched an investigation into the dumping of a large volume of rubbish in Garvey's Close in Longford Town.

The rubbish, which originated from a large skip bag left on the green, was at one point scattered across the area.

While the litter was later collected and returned to the bag, concerns remained that it could still be accessed by dogs or other animals.placeholder image

Longford County Council have now confirmed that "investigations into the dumping incident" have commenced.

The rubbish - which was remarked upon by one passer-by as "an eyesore" - will be removed from the area today, Monday May 11, following council intervention.

Richard Smith, Senior Executive Officer, told the Longford Leader that Longford County Council (LCC) had contacted the private waste collection company involved and arranged for the removal of the rubbish to be dealt with as a matter of priority.

Said Mr Smith, "In this case, a ‘Skip Bag’ service used by a member of the public is involved."

"As with the ‘Skip Bag’ service, collection is dependent on a private waste collection and subject to their operational timelines."
