The Longford RFC fundraiser will also benefit St Christopher’s Special School

Multiple All Ireland winner Davy Fitzgerald believes the much-anticipated ‘Fittest Superstars’ Longford RFC fundraiser today in Longford will be 'brilliant' and an entertaining and challenging event.

Proceeds from the event will also go to St. Christopher’s Special School.

Davy said teams of four people compete in 'Fittest Superstars' and each team must include at least one man and one woman.

The competitors attempt to complete obstacle courses designed for strength and strategy and many elements may be familiar to participants.

Davy said there will be a 'brilliant' atmosphere on Saturday, May 2 for a very good cause.

There will be a €5,000 prize pot and the Clare man said the event will follow the much-loved format of Ireland’s Fittest Family, featuring some of the exciting obstacles from the hit show, which he co-created in 2011.

"You'd see different courses on Ireland's Fittest Family and we come and we build the course and teams of four participate in it.

"You know, it's a tough challenge but while it's tough it's also a bit of fun."

Davy said there are 13 obstacles each team has to navigate and each team has to work together and communicate positively to achieve the best possible results.

"The course is pretty long. but it's a nice course.

"It's the exact same as when you watch Ireland's Fittest Family in the final, it's a very similar course.

"You need to interact with the four people on the different obstacles, you just can't do it on your own and you need to figure out different things."

Davy, who organises about 10 similar events across the country annually, said the teams are 'raising money for a good cause, the club' and they are doing it with their friends and there is a very enjoyable strategic side to it.

"It is a challenge but if you have any small bit of fitness at all you'll be able to do it.

"It takes about maybe 10 minutes to get it done and you need to be able to think your way around it and it's a bit of craic as well."

"A lot of people are into their fitness and that, but do you have to be extremely fit?

"No, it depends what you want to do this for; you can do it to win it or you can do it to just say I've done it. "

Davy said they get a lot of teams who are just 'mad to say, I went up the ramp, I went over a 10 foot wall' and take on the challenge.

"It's brilliant, we've been doing this now for years and it's gone down very well.

"So, it's a good fundraiser, it is a bit of fun and I suppose the biggest objective of this is Longford Rugby Club want funds to do X amount.

"Those funds help with underage, senior teams, they help a lot of people so that's the cause and that's the why.

"Our event is just what you see on TV and people saying 'Do you know what, I'd love to have a go at that' so it works well from both of our points of view.

"What I love is teams just having a think about what they're doing.

"It's even more than fitness, you need to be able to have a bit of a strategy going around and I love that part of it.

"We love the event, I've a good few people working with me and all I can say is we'll be very helpful on the day, it's hands-on, you won't ever feel alone on the course, there will be plenty of help there."

Each team must raise €800 to enter and members of the Longford’s Fittest Superstars committee are available to give tips on raising funds.

There is more information on the event and how to enter on the Longford RFC website www.longfordrugby.com.
