Senator Micheál Carrigy: “It would be much easier for families if the clinic were held in Longford, even if it’s just once a week.”

Longford Fine Gael Senator Micheál Carrigy, working closely with Cllr Peggy Nolan, is calling for immediate action to bring back ophthalmology (eye care) services to Longford.

Many local residents have raised concerns about the recent loss of these services due to ongoing recruitment challenges, which has made it difficult for them to access the care they need.

Currently patients are required to travel to Athlone for their appointments.

Senator Carrigy believes there is a better solution: having the ophthalmologist come to Longford instead. “This simple change could make a big difference,” Senator Carrigy said. “It would be much easier for families if the clinic were held in Longford, even if it’s just once a week.”

He added, "This change would be especially helpful for parents, students, caregivers, and families. It would mean less school time missed for children and less time off work for parents. It would also reduce the travel difficulties many people face when trying to get to Athlone."

Senator Carrigy and Cllr Nolan have asked health authorities to consider this proposal to bring the eye clinic back to Longford. “We know this would be a big help to the families who rely on these services,” Senator Carrigy added.

Both Senator Carrigy and Cllr Nolan are committed to finding a solution that works best for the people of Longford. They hope to see these essential services restored locally as soon as possible.
