A councillor in the Granard Municipal District area has called on Longford County Council to carry out an audit on road signs in the area where they are damaged and need to be cleaned.

Fine Gael representative Colin Dalton also requested that junction markings are refreshed where necessary.

The Ballinalee native stated motorists still read road signs but in some cases the 'signs are very poor' and sometimes they are impossible to read.

"We need to get them cleaned up so that they are visible.

"In some areas the road markings are completely gone and they need to be refreshed."

The motion was seconded by Cllr Garry Murtagh and he said there was a previous motion submitted where signs were missing letters and numbers.

"I also feel that some of the junctions and markings need to be refreshed."

Executive engineer Joe Gorman, who read a response from the local authority, said a similar motion had been submitted by Cllr Turlough McGovern in March 2025.

"Longford County Council arrange for signs to be cleaned, maintained and replaced as of when our resources and funding allow.

"However, this is just one [task] in the substantial work assigned to Granard Municipal District employees and now they are fully engaged in various funded programmes.

"There are no immediate plans to commence a programme of sign cleaning in the municipal district, it may be later in the year, if funding resources allow, that we will initiate such a programme."
