Charged with sexual assault of a woman in Longford

A man was charged with sexual assault of a woman when he appeared before the recent sitting of Longford District Court.
The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with sexual assault in the grounds of St Mel’s Cathedral on September 23 last.
The court heard the injured party met the defendant and they then went to the rear of the cathedral, where they began kissing before the alleged sexual assault occurred.
Garda Sergeant Enda Daly said it was alleged the man put his hand down the woman’s trousers and penetrated her. When she attempted to leave, he pulled her back.
Afterwards, the woman rang gardaí and made a complaint about the incident.
The man and the injured party were known to each other.
A very short clip of CCTV footage was shown to Judge Bernadette Owens.
After hearing an outline of the facts and viewing the footage, Judge Owens said she would accept jurisdiction, meaning the case will be tried in the district court.
The court heard the defendant, who is a father of one, is pleading guilty.
Judge Owens said it would be worthwhile seeing if the injured party wishes to make a victim impact statement.
Defence solicitor Frank Gearty said his client is of limited means, but could make an offer of €1,000, as a contribution. The defendant had no previous convictions.
Judge Owens also requested a probation report on the defendant.
The case was adjourned to April 24, 2024 for the victim impact statement and probation report.
