The County Manager announced that the cost of the refurbishment project had been estimated by the Office of Public Works at £2.2 million and Cllr Mickey Nevin predicted there was “no way” that kind of money could be spent on such a project in the current economic climate.

“Up the road in Castlerea the Minister has stopped work on a badly needed prison and now she is going to spend £2.2m on refurbishing the Courthouse”, said Cllr Nevin, “don't tell me that she won't have a re-think when she sees that she could have a new courthouse on a greenfield site for £700,000 .........let's be frank about this, it's not going to happen, not while you are in that chair, Mr Chairman or not while I am on this planet”.

Cllr Peter Murphy moved a notice of motion seeking a completion date for the refurbishment works. Mickey Nevin told Cllr Murphy that he should be looking for a commencement date.

“Cllr Murphy, yourself and myself will be above in the Market Square on two walking sticks before this project even starts” predicted Cllr Nevin.
