A planning application submitted by a Longford company in relation to converting an iconic town centre building into a commercial premises has been given the go ahead by Longford County Council.

Cassidy Blinds Ltd - the director of which is listed as Shane Cassidy with a business address of Ballagh Road, Stonepark, Longford - was this week granted permission to proceed with changing the use of the ground floor level of The Corner House, 1 Dublin Street.

The landmark town centre building is of historical significance as it once served as a ticket office for the White Star Line, the company best known for owning the Titanic.

In addition to the proposed change of use of the ground floor level of the existing former public house into a retail/commercial space, the application also included proposed alterations to the existing facades and erection of a new shopfront and all ancillary site works.

In granting permission, Longford County Council attached 4 conditions, including that the public road “shall not be adversely affected by the works with regard to pavement, obstructions, road operation, verges or drainage.”

Additional conditions were imposed for reasons such as the promotion of “sustainable energy usage and in order to comply with the requirements of national building codes of practice”; the interests of proper planning and sustainable development, and to ensure that the development remain in accordance with the permission granted.

The planning applicants, Cassidy Blinds Ltd, are cited on the application as being the owners of the historically significant Corner House.
