Gardaí launch probe after blaze rips through house in Longford town

Gardaí have launched an investigation into the circumstances behind a blaze which ripped through a house in Longford town, the Leader has learned.

Extensive damage was caused to a bungalow located along the county town's Convent Road area late on Monday night.

The property, which is situated almost directly across from Longford's Meán Scoil Mhuire, had been derelict for some time.

The Leader visited the scene of the fire last night where substantial smoke and fire damage to the property's roof and front living room was clearly evident from the public road.

In separate statements to longfordleader.ie, both gardaí and Longford County Council confirmed no one was injured in the blaze which took hold shortly before midnight.

"Gardaí and emergency services attended the scene of a fire at a house in the St Joseph’s Road area, Longford on the 5th June 2023," said a garda spokesperson.

"Local fire services extinguished the fire. There are no reports of injuries. Investigations are ongoing."

"Longford and Edgeworthstown Fire Brigades attended a house fire at Convent Road, Longford Town on Monday 5 June," read the statement.
