The death occurred, unexpectedly but peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Dún Mhuire, of Sr Maura Fay, Dún Mhuire, Lyster Street, Athlone; formerly Convent of Mercy, Ballymahon, County Longford, and Collinstown, County Westmeath.

Sr Maura was predeceased by her parents Michael and Frances, and brothers Michael and Fr. Sean. Deeply regretted by her sister Olive Carey (Killucan), her nieces and nephews Michael Fay, Sean Fay, Maura Galvin, David Carey, Deirdre Tiernan and Linda Carey, grandnieces, grandnephews, relatives, friends, and the Sisters of Mercy Western Province.

It was with great sadness that the Mercy Secondary School Ballymahon community learned on Thursday of the  passing of Sr Maura. Sr Maura was a much loved and respected, long serving teacher at Mercy Ballymahon.

She was a very successful English teacher but of course was so well known and remembered for her love and skill as a Music teacher. She informed, inspired and influenced generations of young students.

Her distinctive trademark  of total commitment and genuine dedication was the hallmark  of her unique character and personality. She had a great sense of humour and fun, which those of us who worked alongside her, so appreciated.

She created standout and golden memories for her students, teaching colleagues and the local community with the great Operas that she produced in the school down through the years and also the participation and  many wins in National Choral Competitions. She will be greatly missed.

Sr Maura  reposed on Saturday, June 8 in St Matthew's Church, Ballymahon, from 5.30pm with prayers at 7.30pm.

Mass of the Resurrection took place on Sunday at 11.30am followed by burial at the Convent Cemetery in Ballymahon.

Sr Maura's family and community express their gratitude to everyone for their support at this difficult time.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
