Every year The Associated Craft Butchers of Ireland honour excellence in their trade with an award ceremony recognising innovation and commitment to quality.

“We secured the All-Ireland Award for our White Pudding out of a strong field of 240 competitors,” Louis Herterich, the third of that name to assist customers in the Longford Town butcher shop, told The Leader.

The other awards were Gold winner - Traditional Pork Sausage; Gold winner - Traditional Thick Pork Sausage; and Gold winner - Black pudding: “We have had a few successes in the past. We have a good track record in competitions, this year we are going to Blas na hÉireann, the Irish Food Awards, and we hope to add to our award collection,” the award winning butcher said.

“It's good for Longford. It's good to have an award winning standard. The customers seem to appreciate it, they keep coming back anyway,” Louis laughed.

Renowned across the region for their high quality range of delicious sausages, beef, lamb, pork and poultry, Herterich's butcher is a landmark on Ballymahon St. The business was established in 1956 by Louis Herterich Snr and his wife Teresa. The Herterich family are originally from Baviera in southern Germany.

Louis says meeting customer's needs is at the centre of their business ethos: “As a local Craft Butcher shop we take great pride in knowing where our products come from. We have full traceability and can reassure customers on the quality of the product.”

Louis was presented his award on the night by Kildare TD and Junior Minister for Agriculture, Martin Heydon. Jack Molloy, President of the Associated Craft Butchers stressed the importance of supporting local business: “Most butchers in Ireland are independent, family run businesses, and buying from them helps to support our local communities. The money we spend there will stay in the local area.”
