Judge heard Longford bank card thief 'gave in to temptation' before shopping spree

The complainant reported that she mislaid her card in Longford on December 9, 2023
A woman who stole a bank card and used it five times to buy groceries and place a bet has been directed to come up with compensation.
Justyna Lewandowska of Kilnacarrow, Ballinalee, Longford pleaded guilty at the local district court to theft.
Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said the injured party made a statement of complaint to Gardaí where she outlined she was in Longford for the day on December 9, 2023 and she believed she had lost her AIB bank card somewhere in the county town.
"Later she was contacted by the bank who informed her that they had frozen her card after there was suspicious activity on the account.
"She was informed that five separate transactions were authorised, which she stated she knew she had not given permission.
"The bank provided times and locations for these transactions and upon viewing CCTV Gardaí were able to identify the defendant, as the person who had tapped the card."
Sgt Mahon said a total of €72 was spent on the card in Tesco, The Kiosk and a bookmaker's shop.
Ms Lewandowska had no previous convictions.
Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client was apologetic and she had endured difficult personal circumstances in recent times.
"She found the card and regretfully gave in to temptation."
Ms Lewandowska bought dog food, groceries and she placed a €20 bet.
The court heard she was previously given the benefit of the probation act for a similar matter.
Mr Gearty stated she could have €72 for the court within a week.
Judge Owens adjourned the case for one week and directed that the defendant have €72 in compensation in court for the next sitting on July 15 next.
