Launch of Kashmir human rights group in Longford

Raising awareness of the plight of the marginalised people of Jammu and Kashmir is the goal of a new group established in Longford.
Kashmir Peace Forum International are endeavouring to bring to light the human rights abuses in Jammu and Kashmir, a disputed territory administered by India.
Allegations range from mass killings, forced disappearances, torture, rape and sexual abuse to suppression of freedom of speech and bans on religious gatherings in the area that intersects at the India, Pakistan and Chinese borders.
According to Amnesty International, for decades the people of Jammu and Kashmir have suffered “gross human rights violations and abuses committed by both state and non-state actors”.
On a State visit to Ireland last year President of Azad Kashmir and Jammu, Sultan Mehmood, visited Longford at the invitation of the Kashmir Community.
Kashmir national, Parvez Butt, explained the reason for that visit: “Unfortunately an official reception was not possible, but we managed to meet the Council and Municipal District Cathaoirleach and had discussions with local authority officials.
“President Sultan Mehmood's tour was to garner support and highlight the plight of the Kashmiri people.
“They have suffered some of the worst human rights abuses, comparable to those of the Palestinians. President Mehmood's tour was well received and successful in creating the awareness that was until now lacking,” Parvez told the Leader.
Parvez says the President's visit was well received: “There was significant support officially here in Ireland during this visit before he went on to the EU Commission in Brussels and the Hague. His visit to Longford recognised the sizeable Kashmir Community here.”
This Sunday, February 5, is International Kashmir Solidarity Day. It also marks the official launch of the Kashmir Peace Forum International in Ireland.
The launch takes place in Longford Golf Club and Her Excellency Mrs Aisha Farooqui, The Ambassador of Pakistan to Ireland, will be the keynote speaker.
