Longford adopts Phase 2 of Road Safety Action Plan

The Longford Road Safety Action Plan contains specific actions aimed at improving road safety locally and nationally
The second phase of Longford's Road Safety Action Plan has been approved, outlining a range of measures aimed at making the county's roads safer for all road users.
With Ireland’s Government Road Safety Strategy aiming to reduce deaths and serious injuries by 50% over a period of ten years, Longford’s Road Safety Action Plan aims to contribute to that national mission with the council aligning local efforts with Vision Zero, the government’s end goal of achieving zero road deaths or serious injuries.
The Longford Road Safety Action Plan, which was developed in partnership with the Road Safety Working Together Group and unanimously approved by elected members at a meeting of Longford County Council, outlines the specific actions aimed at improving road safety at both local and national level.
Supporting actions outlined in a council report Phase 2 Action Plan Overview include safety improvements being made to national roads adjacent to Longford schools to reduce speeds and improve active travel; improved visibility, lighting and age-friendly seating at regional and local bus stops to enhance safety for those waiting for a bus; and a reduction of the default speed limit on national secondary roads from 100km/h to 80km/h.
The adoption of Phase 2 of this plan was highlighted by Longford County Council as part of #YourCouncilDay, an annual national awareness campaign aimed at celebrating the work of Ireland's local authorities and showcasing the wide range of services they deliver.
Longford County Council said the action plan represents an important milestone in strengthening the county's commitment to safer roads, responsible road use, and sustainable transport for all road users.
