The Longford County Choir will hold its last concert of the season in St Brigid's Church, Ardagh on Friday, May 26 at 8pm.

The programme will consist of a selection of new and old favourite songs.

It will feature the young Ukrainian soprano Dasha Ostapenko who has recently joined the choir.

The choir will also be joined by talented locals Éilis and Áine McLoughlin. Éilis formerly sang with the renowned group Anuna and Aine is an accomplished harpist and singer.

The Children’s Choir from Glen National school will also perform.

The performance will be accompanied and conducted by Musical Director, Fintan Farrelly. The choir has been rehearsing since January and the members are looking forward to singing in the beautiful church in Ardagh.

There will be no charge for attendance but all donations to parish funds will be greatly appreciated.

The choir has had a busy season having returned in September 2022 following a long lay-off due to covid restrictions.

In October it performed ‘The Peacemakers’ by Karl Jenkins in St Mel's Cathedral. This was a major work that extolled peace.

It featured texts from some of the world’s greatest peacemakers such as Gandhi and Martin Luther King.

In December the annual Christmas Concert was held in St Mel’s Cathedral. There was a great attendance and it was a wonderful start to the Christmas season.

In April the choir gave a short performance in Longford Shopping Centre to celebrate the provision of the public piano there.

In July the choir will visit Kilkenny and sing in Kilkenny Castle.

Later in the year a concert is planned for Ballinalee.

The choir is grateful for the continued support of Longford County Council and its Arts Office. The choir members were saddened by the sudden death of the County Arts Officer, Fergus Kennedy earlier in the year. Fergus was the person who initiated the foundation of the Longford County Choir many years ago.

As well as performing regularly, the choir has also raised over €70,000 for local charities.

At last week’s rehearsal presentations were made to four Longford charities, St Christopher’s, Longford Hospice, Alzheimer Association and DePaul and Bethany House.
