A young man facing a string of charges including violent disorder, theft and possession of cannabis will return before Longford District Court in February to have the matter finalised.

Alan Fahy (22) of 16 Chestnut Close, Clonbalt Woods, Longford, was before Longford District Court facing 17 charges, some allegedly committed while the defendant was still a juvenile.

The defendant is charged with the theft of cash, a bank card and sports bag at Clonbalt Woods, Longford on August 29, 2020.

Charges of violent disorder, assault and mobile phone theft on November 13, 2020 are also levelled.

Two charges from October 20, 2020 are for theft of a mobile phone and getting into a stationary car.

On March 9, 2021 he was charged with the unlawful possession of cannabis. On November 7, 2022 he was charged with possession of cannabis, obstructing a Garda, threatening and abusive behaviour at Drumlish Rd, Longford.

Fahy is also charged with trespass on October 28 2020. A public intoxication charge from July 26, 2020 relates to an incident at Kilmacugh Avenue, Athlone, Westmeath. A charge of unlawful possession of cannabis at The Mill, Clondra dates from September 19, 2021.

Two charges from June 25, 2020 are of the theft of cigarettes and obstructing a Garda. The final charges are a Covid breech on March 30, 2021 and public intoxication on September 24, 2020.

Solicitor John Quinn said his client was “engaging positively” and “taking responsibility”.

Mr Quinn said the probation report favourable in “certain respects”.

Sergeant Enda Daly said the prosecution was seeking liberty to re-enter the matter if anything arises.

Accepting Mr Quinn's observation on the Probation Report Judge Bernadette Owens stated that the final “piece of the jigsaw” is a psychiatric assessment.

The judge adjourned matters to February 21, 2023 for that assessment and to “see what happens” in the intervening time.

Judge Owens concluded by saying: “If he continues to do what he is doing we will be able to finalise matters.”
