Young man found in possession of cannabis

A young man who was found in possession of cannabis was told he can avoid a conviction if he makes a donation to the court poor box.

Fionn Harbourne (19) with a charge sheet address of Moydow, Longford came before Longford District Court facing a charge that on Saturday, September 2, 2023 at Breadens Lane Longford he had the unlawful possession of cannabis.

Sergeant Mark Mahon told Judge Bernadette Owens that the value of the cannabis was around €100.

Sgt Mahon said that on the evening in question officers saw three males acting suspiciously in the Breadens Lane area, two were known to the officers and were searched under the misuse of drugs act.

Mr Harbourne was found to be in possession of the drugs, admitted ownership and signed the Garda's notebook confirming his ownership.

An analysis of the seized contraband tested positive for cannabis. The defendant had no previous convictions.

Solicitor Michelle Reynolds pointed out that her client had cooperated fully with and has not come to the attention of Garda since.

Taking account of the details of the case Judge Owens said that if the defendant has €350 for the court poor box by November 19 he can avoid a conviction, otherwise he will receive a fine of €300.
