Longford District Court: Uninsured driver fled scene in state of panic

Defendant “facing up to his responsibilities”
An uninsured driver, who fled the scene after Gardaí caught up with his car was handed a one year disqualification from driving at last week’s sitting of the District Court.
In evidence the court heard that on June 2 last, gardaí observed a car driving up St Michael’s Road, Longford town at speed. There was black smoke coming out of the vehicle.
The defendant, Leandro Moura, with an address at 3 Market Street, Granard, had neither insurance or a driving licence.
The defendant’s solicitor, Frank Gearty, told the court that his client was “facing up to his responsibilities.”
“He is a Brazilian national. He is a married man with two children. He works but his partner does not work,” Mr Gearty added.
“He works as a mechanic and he is good at his work. He is a young man of modest means,” Mr Gearty continued.
The solicitor went that “in a state of panic,” his client had “very regrettably made himself scarce”.
Judge Owens disqualified Mr Moura for one year. He was fined a total of €750.
