Gardaí observed the motorist driving with no lights on at Knockahaw, Dublin Road, Longford

A motorist who was detected driving in Longford with no lights on his vehicle and drugs in his system has been convicted and disqualified for one year.

Michael Cookland of Oaklands, Carrick On Shannon pleaded guilty to the offence at Longford District Court last week.

Sergeant Mark Mahon, court presenter, said Gardaí observed the defendant driving with no lights on his vehicle and driving erratically at Knockahaw, Dublin Road, Longford on September 17, 2023.

Garda Edward Flanagan pursued and stopped the driver and he directed Mr Cookland to undergo an oral fluid preliminary drug test that produced a positive result.

The court heard a blood specimen was obtained by a doctor and the result was 'positive for drugs' and he was found to have an illegal substance in his system.

Mr Cookland had 11 previous convictions.

Solicitor Frank Gearty said his client had a problem with drugs and while he has tackled that he still suffered from anxiety.

Mr Gearty stated in better times Mr Cookland worked as an upholster.

Judge Bernadette Owens decided to impose a one year driving ban and she fined the defendant €500 with nine months to pay.
