Teagasc timber tips

Teagasc, in conjunction with the Forestry Division, DAFM is organising two important on-site demonstrations in Roscommon and Galway on managing forestry storm damage, focusing on harvesting of timber and planning for forest restoration. All forest owners impacted by recent storms are encouraged to attend.

The event details are:

Tuesday 1st April 2025 - Mountbellew , Co. Galway. This event provides an option to attend either a morning or afternoon session.

Tuesday 8th April 2025 – Castlerea, Co.Roscommon.

The priority for these events is the provision of advice on appropriate post-storm planning and responses to maximise the potential timber harvest value for impacted owners.

The events will be held in storm damaged forests where an appropriate response plan is in place and windblow clearance operations are underway. Because of the unpredictable nature of windblow, a number of important issues arise for forest owners which will be discussed at both events, including:

Health and safety issues

Felling licence and road grant updates

Harvesting windblown trees

Timber product assortments

Marketing and sale of windblown timber

Planning for forest restoration

Attendees will meet at a convenient meeting point (available upon registration) and will be bussed in groups from the meeting point to the forest site.

All forest owners impacted by recent storms are encouraged to attend these free events. Pre-registration is required. To register and for further information use the QR in the accompanying advert or go to www.teagasc.ie/forestryevents. Event times and meeting point details will be provided on registration. Further details are also available from your local Teagasc Forestry Advisor Liam Kelly 087 9090495.
