Longford man apologises for causing trouble at take away

A defendant “extremely embarrassed” by his level of intoxication was told he can avoid a criminal conviction if he makes a donation to a local charity.
Darren Flynn (37) of 13 Knock, Lanesboro, Longford was before the court on two public order charges.
Solicitor Frank Gearty told the court his client was entering a plea of guilty to failing to comply with the directions of Gardai and of public intoxication. Sergeant Mark Mahon described how the defendant came to Garda attention arising from an incident on Saturday December 17, 2022.
Sgt Mahon said officers were called regarding a disturbance on Main Street, Lanesboro where a male in a highly intoxicated condition was causing trouble at a local take away. The attending officers found Mr Flynn in a 'highly intoxicated manner causing a nuisance'. He was asked to leave the area, but refused to do so and was subsequently arrested.
The sergeant said Mr Flynn's only previous convictions were for road traffic offences. Mr Gearty said his client was extremely embarrassed and very sorry. He told the court the defendant cares for his partner, who is on disability, on a full time basis.
Mr Gearty explained that Mr Flynn had gone out for chips, adding: “He must realise he cannot drink to such an excess. He is very apologetic, both to the chipper and the Gardaí.”
Judge Bernadette Owen said if Mr Flynn makes a payment of €250 St Christopher she would strike the matter out, but if the donation is not forthcoming she will impose a fine of €250. The matter was then adjourned to April 4.
