Suspended sentence for no insurance on vehicle

A Granard man who had no insurance on his vehicle received a suspended sentence and an eight year disqualification from driving at Longford District Court.

Brendan Leddy, with an address at 12 Granard View, Granard, had five previous convictions for driving without insurance and a total of 50 previous convictions.

On July 26, 2023, the defendant was found to have no insurance on his vehicle by Gardaí at Ballynascraw, Granard. His car was seized.

His solicitor, Frank Gearty, told the court that his client had driven on the day in question to get insulin, as he suffers from diabetes.

Mr Gearty went on to say that he “has been readmitted to the family home.”

“He works on a part-time basis valeting cars. His partner speaks highly of him,” he stated.

Mr Gearty added that Mr Leddy will “comply with any court order.”

“This is the fourth day of my client sitting in court and he has been observing the serious consequences of not complying with the law,” Mr Gearty added.

Judge Owens handed Mr Leddy a four month prison sentence, which she suspended for 18 months.

She also disqualified the defendant from driving for eight years.
