Longford motorists who litter from cars face increase in fines

Litter fines are increasing nationwide from tomorrow, Tuesday September 1, as motorists are urged to think twice before throwing waste from their vehicles.
Longford motorists could face significantly higher fines for littering from tomorrow, Tuesday September 1, as the penalty for dropping litter increases from €150 to €250 nationwide.
The increase is being implemented as part of the state’s Circular Economy strategy, with a new €250,000 fund also being announced to help local authorities keep public spaces clean and tackle litter.
Motorists are now being reminded that litter discarded from vehicles, including cigarette butts, will result in repercussions.
Car insurance expert Ian O’Reilly of Chill said cigarette butts are among the most common forms of litter found around roads and public spaces and warned that the increase in litter fines sends out the clear message that littering is not a harmless act.
