Longford pair to stand trial over cash demands

Two Longford men are to stand trial accused of robbing and threatening another man to hand over cash during an incident earlier this year.
Thomas McDonagh (34), 1 O'Connor Park, Longford and Hughie Nevin (43), 67 MacEoin Park, Longford, were both charged with making an unwarranted demand for cash “with menace” from an alleged male victim on March 9, 2023.
That incident allegedly occurred at Dublin Street, Longford.
Mr McDonagh stood with hands clasped in the body of the court as details surrounding the alleged charges were read out before Judge Brendan O'Reilly.
Sergeant Mark Mahon said the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) had consented for Mr McDonagh to be sent forward for trial on the aforementioned charge alongside that of an alleged theft from the same victim at Breadens Lane.
Sgt Mahon said he would be seeking to extend time with garda station bail Mr McDonagh was also under being likewise extended.
Mr McDonagh was remanded on continuing bail to a sitting of Longford District Court on December 12 for the purposes of the serving of a book of evidence.
His co-accused, Mr Nevin, was also charged with the same alleged offences.
Garda Anthony Scanlon gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution.
He spoke of having charged Mr Nevin prior to last week's District Court sitting, saying the accused made no reply after caution.
John Quinn, defending, said the question of bail was “academic” as Mr Nevin was in custody on other matters.
Mr Nevin was remanded in custody to a sitting of Longford District Court on December 12.
